Survival Gear: Disaster, Emergency Preparedness, Camping & Survival Supply

Are you ready? Preparedness simply means having survival items in reach and knowing how to use them. Whether it's surviving a natural disaster, like an earthquake, hurricane, tornado, or flood, being stranded on the road in your car, or setting off into the outdoors for some camping and hiking, begin by assembling the essential items you'll need to meet any contingency or emergency.

If disaster strikes your home are you prepared to get by with no heat, no light, no running water, and no electricity? Plan now and build your survival kit.

Home Preparedness:  If disaster strikes are you prepared to get by with no heat, no light, no running water, and no electricity?  Plan now and build your survival kit to include the essential items you and your family will need to survive the next 72 hours in an emergency. It is important to know what natural disasters can affect your area and what to do in the event of one striking. Read through the appropriate Disaster and Emergency guides. Watch the weather and stay on top of the news if a hurricane or other severe weather is predicted to come your way. Stockpile non-perishable food, water, first-aid kits, blankets, flashlights and extra batteries.  If local authorities are telling you to evacuate, then EVACUATE!  If you have prepared properly, then you have created a plan to survive any emergency.

Automobile Preparedness:  You don't have to be driving the vast expanse of Alaska to get stuck in your car. Stories of drivers surviving days in their vehicle due to accidents and breakdowns are reported every year, in all kinds of climate and terrain. According to both the AAA and FEMA, here is a list of things every driver should keep in their vehicle. Sustenance. The first priority for any stuck situation is maintaining hydration. Carrying along some energy bars and bottled water, and take along purification tablets just in case. Survival. Pack a wool blanket or space blanket. Be sure you have a dependable flashlight, glow sticks, matches, and emergency candles. To keep you dry, bring along a waterproof poncho and tarp. A loud whistle works better than shouting. A solar or hand cranked powered light, radio, and cell phone charger are essential.

Is your automobile prepped for an emergency? Stories of drivers surviving days in their vehicle due to accidents and breakdowns are reported every year.

First Aid. If you're venturing away from civilization or if you just have kids - it's smart to keep a first-aid kit in the car.  We'd get the most thorough one we could, but even making your own with a few basic items is better than nothing. Mechanical. Every vehicle should carry a basic toolkit.  A good quality plastic gas can is handy too. We would also carry a multi-tool like the Leatherman, and even the 3-in-1 flashlight. Make sure to bring along some work gloves, wire ties, WD-40, and zip-lock bags. Finally, bring along 6-gauge jumper cables, spare fuses and bulbs.

How do you think you would fare in a survival situation? Could you build a shelter? Could you light a fire without matches? Could you forage for food and purify water?

Wilderness Preparedness: CBS's Survivor has become one of the most watched television shows in America. One of the reasons for this show's success is that there is an adventurer in all of us and since we all cannot be in a survival situation we like to live vicariously through the people on the show.

But don't make the mistake of thinking that being in a survival situation would be fun. Wilderness Survival is not a game, there is no reward challenges, and there is no immunity. How do you think you would fare in a survival situation? Could you build a shelter? Could you light a fire without matches? Could you forage for food and purify water? In real life you don't have luxury items, you don't get tarps and matches and camping supplies. In real life you may not have any tools except your own two hands. If you were stranded in the wilderness would you end up a survivor?
