There were 461 incidents reported last year under Michigan State University's relationship violence and sexual misconduct policy — more than double the 201 reported incidents the previous year, according to a first-of-its-kind report released Thursday by the university.
President Lou Anna K. Simon said she doesn't believe the increased numbers are a reflection of more sexual assault on campus.
“We believe the increase in reports is a result of efforts at MSU to raise awareness, rather than an increase in incidents,” Simon said
in a statement. “This is consistent with data from the National College Health Assessment that shows MSU students have the highest level of awareness regarding sexual assault and relationship violence among all participating universities.”
MSU's report comes the day before Michigan first lady Sue Snyder will host the second annual summit to combat campus sexual assaults.
It also comes a year after a federal investigation into how MSU handled sexual assault complaints, which concluded the university had mishandled two cases and did not have proper protocols in place to investigate other complaints.
Incidents include sexual harassment, sexual assault, sexual exploitation, relationship violence, stalking and retaliation.
Our feeling at The Covert Eye is that even ONE incident of sexual assault is one too many. We believe every woman, and especially those on college campuses and universities, carry with them a proven self-defense weapon that they can keep at their fingertips and use at a moment's notice when the unexpected suddenly happens.
Don't become another statistic that gets reported as one more unfortunate victim of assault, and then gets lost in the paperwork or fails to get properly investigated by campus authorities. Be prepared instead and carry something as simple as a pepper spray or a Kubotan on your keychain or belt. Whichever one you choose, both come in several styles and colors and cost less than $10. We believe it's one of the best investments you can make, and one we hope you'll never have to use.

NEW VISUAL ELECTRONTIC SPY FINDER PRO
Protect Your Privacy!
This compact battery powered device allows visual detection of any hidden or spy camera, powered on or not. Give your customers peace of mind that their privacy has not been compromised. Any and all hidden cameras will be detected by this device. No camera can hide. This new technology is only available from Intellicam Systems. For the last 5 years, this technology was sold exclusively to the U.S. Government, but now we make it available to the general public. This technology is truly a remarkable breakthrough. With the ease of use and extreme effectiveness of this device, we believe all of us can contribute to ending the inappropriate placement of hidden cameras where the public has a reasonable right to privacy.
Operating Principle
The SpyCam Finder hidden camera detector/locator is the most reliable and easy to use technology on the market for making sure that your private actions are not being watched. Its function is based on the principle of optical augmentation. This technical jargon refers to the phenomenon where light reflected from a focused optical system, such as a video camera, is reflected along the same path as the incident light. This means that if a hidden camera is illuminated and viewed with the SpyFinder technology, then a strong reflection from the target camera will reveal its position to the user. The SpyFinder exploits this phenomenon by using a ring of ultra-bright LEDs arranged around a viewing port. When a user scans a room looking through the viewing port, a hidden camera appearing in the field of view will brightly reflect the light from the LEDs.
Operation
While the equivalent of rocket scientists thought up the SpyFinder technology, operating it is not rocket science. Simply look through the viewing port (see photo) and depress the button to activate the LEDs. Slowly scan areas where hidden cameras are suspected and look for bright reflected spots. Remember, most hidden video cameras use pinhole camera lenses, so the spot you are looking for could be small.
If you see a suspected camera, move your vantage point slightly. If the location of the reflection moves as you move, then this is not a camera. If the location of the reflection does not move, then it is highly likely that you have discovered the optics of a hidden camera. For example, consider a wall clock that has a domed plastic cover and a pinhole camera concealed under the numeral six on the clock face. When the SpyFinder is used to scan the clock, a reflection will be noted where the camera is located beneath the six and a reflection will also be noted from the plastic cover. However if you move your vantage point just a little, you will notice that the location of the false positive reflection point from the plastic cover will move, while the reflection from the camera remains under the numeral six on the clock face.
Maintenance
The only maintenance required of the SpyFinder is to change the batteries. The device is powered by two AAA batteries, which will provide over two hours of continuous on time. To replace the batteries, the screw should be removed from the back of the unit. The back cover can then be lifted off to expose the batteries. The old batteries should be discarded appropriately and fresh AAA batteries should be installed with the correct polarity show on the circuit board.

Editor's note: Martha Salomaa, an Alabama teacher, shot an intruder who broke into her house in August 2012. She says criminals have a plan and you should too!
(CNN) -- I'm a light sleeper, so when sudden cracking of wood and clashing of metal echoed through my home before dawn on August 14, 2012, my feet were immediately on the bedroom floor.
I ran into the family room believing that a recently adopted stray cat must have knocked something off a table. What I found was a man dressed only in boxer shorts standing between me and the hall that goes to my daughters'
bedrooms. I yelled at the man, and when he turned to face me, his eyes were flat, vacant, dead. A mother knows when her children are in danger, and I knew.

As many as 50 Phoenix police officers may soon be wearing tiny convert video surveillance cameras as part of their uniform accouterment if a $500,000 grant is approved in early September through a joint partnership with Arizona State University and the U.S. Department of Justice. The grant is being called The Smart Policing Initiative.
Earlier this spring, a pilot program was tested with 18 officers wearing the small hidden spy cameras attached to their uniform in an effort to increase police transparency with the public. The three month trial, which concluded in June, resulted in 860 hours worth of video. From among the recordings, portions of the footage will be used as evidence in 62 cases going before the court.
The spy camera is worn like a Bluetooth device around the ear, and can be turned on and off from a remote control on the chest. A pocket recorder, or small video monitor, is attached to the belt. Once activated, video can't be edited or deleted.
Arizona law requires at least one person be aware they are being recorded, although the law is not well defined in how that is communicated or acknowledged, and can likely not even register depending on the situation or number of persons being confronted by officers. During the trial period some citizens did key in on the cameras being worn and asked if they were being recorded.
During the pilot program, Phoenix police tested Scottsdale-based TASER International's Axon cameras, which are more obvious in their appearance than traditional covert cameras of the same type, and come with a more heftier price tag. The cost of Axon cameras are about $1,700, plus an annual $1,200 each to archive the video footage. Likewise, a comparable wireless Bluetooth covert camera from any local security store runs about $200. The grant doesn't specify which brand of cameras are to be used, but does require the police agency to enlist a research partner. In the case of Phoenix it will be A.S.U., who will collect and analyze the data and calculate the effectiveness of their efforts.
The “Candid-Camera” officer video pilot program was one of 34 recommendations developed by a Phoenix task force last January to help improve relations between the police department and the community. The task force came into being in April, 2010, after several incidents involving the police angered citizens, including a March 2010 incident which saw City Councilman Michael Johnson, an Afro-American, wrestled to the ground and handcuffed by a White police officer.
With the eye of “Big Brother” becoming more prevalent in our daily lives now, and technology providing a video recorder to anyone with a cell phone, providing police officers with a wearable video recording device is the logical next step in the progression. How this plays out over time and the legal impact it could carry will be questions that will no doubt be discussed, but for now it may give us pause to be mindful of what we say and how we respond the next time we are confronted by an officer of the law.

The National Breast Cancer Foundation was founded in 1991 by breast cancer survivor, Janelle Hail. She was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1980 at the age of 34. At the time of her diagnosis, there was little information about the disease, and she was forced to make a decision about her health with few options. After her treatment, Janelle made a commitment to help women around the world by educating them about breast cancer and the importance of early detection.
NBCF's mission is to help women now by providing help and inspiring hope to those affected by breast cancer through early detection, education and support services.
Breast cancer is one of the leading health crises for women in the United States. 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. There is currently no known cure for breast cancer, and its early diagnosis is critical to survival.
According to The National Cancer Institute (NCI), getting a high-quality mammogram and having a clinical breast exam on a regular basis are the most effective ways to detect breast cancer early. The National Cancer Institute recommends women age 40 and older receive annual mammogram screenings to provide early detection of breast cancer.

Get Ready to Go Pink!
Now that October has begun, Nikki Reed, Paul McDonald, Elizabeth Hurley, and more celebrities are stepping out to support Breast Cancer Awareness Month at events like Bloomingdale's 2014 Pink Party in Manhattan on Thursday, Oct. 2.
These celebs may be helping by spreading the word to their huge fan bases, but there is an easy and stylish way that you can help, too - by Shopping Pink!
The Covert Eye, the home of Streetwise Security, is proud to contribute toward the fight against breast cancer. Beginning in the spring of 2012, we designated several products as part of our Pink Ribbon series.
A portion of the proceeds from the sale of these products goes to fight breast cancer. This seemed an appropriate cause to donate to, not only because we care about women (indeed, our products help protect women), but because breast cancer has struck close to home among neighbors and friends this past year.
By contributing to the fight against breast cancer we are helping to protect women (wives, mothers, daughters). It's just one more way we are fulfilling our goal of protecting what matters most.
