ARE YOU BEING WATCHED?   A camera was found facing a toilet in the women's restroom of a White Lake Township auto dealership, and police are investigating.   An employee found the recording device about 1 p.m. Wednesday at Szott M-59 Chrysler Jeep and initially thought it was a cell phone, "but it was a little more elaborate than that," White Lake Township Police Chief Adam Kline said. It was found on the floor, just outside the stall door.

The device will be analyzed to find what's on the hard drive and whether anything was transmitted from it, he said.

Kline said police have some suspects.

Auto dealership owner Thad Szott didn't immediately respond to a request for comment. WXYZ-TV (Channel 7) reports he called the discovery "disturbing and disappointing" after working to build trust with the community.

For the first time, students at Georgia's public colleges and universities will be allowed to legally carry stun guns, starting Friday. State Rep. Buzz Brockway, R-Lawrenceville, sponsored the bill and told Channel 2's Lori Geary this is all about safety.

“During the session, I was getting calls, especially from students at Georgia State, because there were three robberies in the library while we were in session, so there were a lot of students who contacted me to say, 'Hey can I have one now?'" Brockway said.

Brockway said most campus policies prohibited the electroshock weapons on campus but this state law will trump those policies.

Earlier this year, Gov. Deal vetoed the campus carry bill, which would have allowed licensed gun owners to bring their weapons onto campus, excluding dorms, fraternity and sorority houses and sporting events.

Georgia HB 792 allows anyone 18 years or older or currently enrolled in a Georgia public college to carry a stun gun anywhere on campus.

University System of Georgia spokesman Charlie Sutlive released a statement to Geary, saying “Our … institutions are aware of HB 792 taking effect July 1, and we have been working directly with our campus chiefs of police and safety departments in preparation.”

The system's chief of police sent out a memo to all campus public safety directors alerting them to the change in the law.

Georgia Gwinnett College student Ashley Flagg told Geary she would not carry a stun gun because she's afraid it would be used against her. Flagg, though, also said this was about her rights as a student.

“I think we should have the right to be able to carry it because in some cases people feel like they are threatened on campus," Flagg said.

Chelsea Jackson, also a student at GGC, said stun guns should not be allowed.

“Just something else to give you an excuse to be violent to somebody because you want to. If someone pushes you in the hallway the wrong way or they step on your toe, if that person is having a bad day, then what?" Jackson said.

Brockway said, “We trust college students to fight wars for us, to drive, to get married, to make all sorts of decisions. I think we can count on them to act wisely and protect themselves.”

The law goes into effect Friday.

Baby-faced burglars have spooked a southeast Atlanta neighborhood where they hauled off a television while one waved a gun. “Kids” is how homeowner Zach Goossen described the trio. They were captured on his security cameras from several angles, with good views of their faces. “You have to wonder, did they just leave school an hour before that or something,” Goosen told Channel 2 Action News.

Police told the news outlet that they have a suspect in custody, warrants for two others and suspicions about a fourth person whom they are trying to identify.

The burglars also took a computer and a gun.

Neighbor Jennifer Murray said the Thursday break in has the neighborhood along Flat Shoals Avenue on edge.

“You wonder what's going on with these kids that they are out during the day running around breaking into houses,” she said.

A former certified nursing assistant was sentenced this week to five months in jail and five years of probation for the abuse of a nursing home resident that was captured by a hidden camera. Rose Dorlean Blaise, 36, was charged with one count of battery on the elderly after she was caught on tape with another CNA abusing a 76-year-old resident with Alzheimer's at Palm Garden of Winter Haven in Winter Haven, FL.   The video footage showed Blaise and Yashika Jones, 30, taunting, kicking and hitting the resident on three different occasions in 2015. Jones was sentenced to 18 months in prison and five years of probation in May.

The resident's family placed the hidden camera inside a clock in his room after they noticed bruising on his body. He has since died.

In addition to her sentence Blaise must undergo a 26-week batterer intervention program, write an apology letter to the man's family and forfeit her nursing license. She also is barred from future employment in a caretaking position.

Officials at Winter Haven were not available for comment on Thursday. In a statement released to Tampa Bay's 10 News following Blaise and Jones' initial arrest, Winter Haven Chief Operating Officer Jeff Bomberger said the company maintained an “overarching commitment” to providing a safe and welcoming care environment, and had suspended the two without pay.

“Upon the completion of this investigation and the satisfaction of all legal and law enforcement issues, we will determine and enact any necessary changes to prevent such actions from ever occurring again,” Bomberger wrote.

Currently Illinois, Washington, Texas, Oklahoma and New Mexico allow cameras to be installed in nursing home resident rooms. In addition, Utah this week moved closer to becoming the first state to pass legislation allowing cameras in assisted living resident rooms.

“As diligent and hardworking as campus police are, they cannot protect all the many people on campus at all time, so let those folks protect themselves.” State Representative Buzz Brockway plans to file a bill next week that would let students at least 18 years of age carry electroshock weapons on all of Georgia's public campuses. The bill, according to Brockway, was written after he discover...ed students are allowed to carry pepper spray on campus but not Tasers or stun-guns.

Many Georgia lawmakers are pushing for legislation that would permit students to carry handguns on campus but state law currently prohibits concealed handgun license holders from exercising their rights on school grounds. Most efforts to bring guns to campus have stalled at the capitol because university presidents oppose the idea. House Bill 544, which would allow anyone to carry guns on Georgia's public campuses, was introduced in 2015 but has not received a committee hearing.

“Students told me they were not allowed to carry pepper spray with them on campus. I thought this was strange so I did some research. I found they were mistaken, and they are allowed to possess pepper spray and similar chemically based protection items. However, several of the public colleges I examined in Georgia explicitly prohibited stun-guns and Tasers on campus. So I decided to introduce a bill to change that,” Brockway told Campus Reform.

Brockway added that he thinks campus police departments are not staffed well enough to account for all of the crimes on campus.

“What I hear from students, faculty, and other campus employees, especially folks at colleges and universities in the city of Atlanta, is a desire to protect themselves,” he said. “As diligent and hardworking as campus police are, they cannot protect all the many people on campus at all time, so let those folks protect themselves.”

Some state senators, however, have raised concerns about the safety of stun-guns. Senator Vincent Fort said Tasers in the hands of college students could lead to many accidental injuries. Brockway disagrees and thinks students who purchase stun-guns will be responsible enough to avoid injuries.

“Pepper spray is allowed and we don't see much misuse of those products on college campuses. I think the people who will choose to purchase electroshock weapons for their personal protection will act responsibly,” Brockway argued.

Unlike campus carry legislation, Brockway's bill would not require students to pass a background check before purchasing a stun-gun.

“As best I can tell, there is currently no requirement in Georgia law for screening or training before purchasing Tasers, stun guns or other electroshock weapons and my bill does not require those things either,” he said.

Taser International Inc. debuted its new updated consumer self-defense weapon Tuesday at a Las Vegas firearms conference. The Taser Pulse is a smaller, discreet sub-compact design so private citizens can carry the stun gun either in their pocket, purse or holster, said Taser spokesman Steve Tuttle.  “We realized that bulky is not good for consumers,” Tuttle said. “The original one was pretty big. This is meant to be carried around. If it's not small it becomes a nightstand device. We want it to fit in a pocket or purse with an intuitive design.

While Scottsdale-based Taser (Nasdaq: TASR) originally started selling to consumers and first started selling its Air Taser consumer model in 1994, a year after the company started, the Pulse is the first consumer upgrade since 2007, Tuttle said.

Taser began selling its stun guns to law enforcement in 1998 as demand grew, and now more than 18,000 law enforcement agencies in 107 countries use Tasers.

Thieves targeting women who are alone, police say. After a series of muggings and car-jackings targeting women, police in Jackson, Mississippi, said Friday that women should arm themselves. "I wouldn't say packing, but I think they need some sort of weapon in order to protect themselves," Officer Colendula Green said. "A lot of friends of mine have tasers or (pepper) spray."

The Jackson Police Department is investigating six cases in the past month of carjacking, armed robbery and auto theft. The two to three thieves, who were either on foot or in a vehicle, are described as black men who are 16 to 20 years old, dressed in dark clothing and hooded shirts. At least one of them was armed during the incidents, police said.

A woman who lives at the Fondren Hills Apartments, where one of the attacks took place, said a friend sent her pepper spray so she could protect herself.

"I sent him the news, and he was worried, but he can't do anything because he's not from here. So he got me (pepper spray) from Amazon," she said.

Jackson police on Thursday issued an urgent warning to women who are alone to be aware of their surroundings when walking to or from their vehicle, along with the following advice:

• If you feel that you are being followed, call 911 immediately and report your location and description. Stay on the phone with the dispatcher in a well-illuminated area until an officer arrives.

• Avoid dark and isolated areas while alone. If possible, travel with others during nighttime hours.

• Report any suspicious activity.

• Avoid distractions, (e.g. cellphones and loud music) while traveling or walking to or away from your vehicle.

• Avoid the display of items that could be attractive to suspects.

"Also, if they have their keys in their hand, if they're approached by a perpetrator, or something like that, they can use their keys as a weapon," Green said.

The Rossen Reports team booked rooms for two nights at some of the most popular hotel chains and rigged them with cameras (all three of the hotels were in northeastern New Jersey). The National Breast Cancer Foundation was founded in 1991 by breast cancer survivor, Janelle Hail.  She was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1980 at the age of 34.  At the time of her diagnosis, there was little information about the disease, and she was forced to make a decision about her health with few options.  After her treatment, Janelle made a commitment to help women around the world by educating them about breast cancer and the importance of early detection.

NBCF's mission is to help women now by providing help and inspiring hope to those affected by breast cancer through early detection, education and support services.

Breast cancer is one of the leading health crises for women in the United States. 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. There is currently no known cure for breast cancer, and its early diagnosis is critical to survival.

According to The National Cancer Institute (NCI), getting a high-quality mammogram and having a clinical breast exam on a regular basis are the most effective ways to detect breast cancer early. The National Cancer Institute recommends women age 40 and older receive annual mammogram screenings to provide early detection of breast cancer.

I make mention of this story out of Scranton, PA., because it illustrates three things.  These burglaries were happening during the day when many of the victims were in the house.  The entries were made either through a window or through doors that were forced open. Many of the residents in the neighborhood didn't think it would happen to them.

Working parents- and that's the majority of American families today- share the anxiety, frustration, and even fear involved in leaving children "on their own" when school lets out, child care arrangements with neighbors and relatives break down, or there simply are not any alternatives. WHAT CAN YOU DO? 1. Make sure your children are ready to care for themselves. 2. Teach them basic safety rules. 3. Know where your kids are, what they are doing, and who they  are with.

1. How to call 9-1-1 or your area's emergency number, or call the operator?

2. How to give directions to your house in case of an emergency?

3. To check in with you or a neighbor immediately after arriving home.

4. To never accept gifts or rides from people they don't know well. (And you approve of)

5. How to use the door, windows, locks and the alarm system if you have one?

6. To never let anyone into the home without asking your permission.

7. To never let a caller at the door or on the phone know they are alone.

8. To carry a house key with them in a safe place (inside a shirt pocket or sock)-do not leave it under a mat or on a ledge.

9. How to escape in case of fire?

10. To not go into the house or apartment if things do not look right- a broken window, ripped screen, or opened door.

11. To let you know about anything that frightens them or makes them feel uncomfortable.

COLDWATER — The violent arrest of Shaun Snyder, 32, on Monday in the Coldwater McDonald's parking lot witnessed by employees and members of the public has caused some concern.

According to the probable cause affidavit and police report, Michigan State Police troopers pulled over the 2000 Pontiac Grand Am Snyder was driving he did was not wearing his seat belt.

Lockport Union-Sun & Journal — Pepper spray was used to subdue a Lockport woman who was charged with resisting arrest after the car she was riding in was pulled over on Main Street early Friday morning, Lockport Police said.

According to police, the vehicle was pulled over for a traffic infraction just after 1 a.m. Friday. The driver, Jacob Starcher, showed possible signs of intoxication, according to the arrest report. During the course of the investigation, Connie Starcher, who also appeared to be intoxicated, became belligerent and uncooperative toward police. When police tried to take her into custody, pepper spray had to be used to subdue her, police said.

The idea in Richardson is to map out a network of home security cameras in neighborhoods throughout the city to aid police in identifying and capturing burglars and other perpetrators. In the case of one local resident, Leo Pease, he found a neighbor lady crying as she came out of her house one day because she had discovered she had been robbed.  Pease calmed her down and then decided to check the footage from his own cameras.  Sure enough, he had caught the burglar on video.  Police used the evidence to eventually arrest the thief and return the stolen items back to the woman.    

This idea of keeping a database of residential security cameras to aid law enforcement to widen its own surveillance systems is likely to be adopted in other cities and towns around the country.

If you're like me you miss the old days of air travel, when going from the ticket counter to your departing gate didn't include long check lines, strip searches and x-ray machines. It seems the list of what you can and can't take with you on the plane is growing, or at least changing every couple of months or so. Small penknives used to be banned, then the TSA said they were ok. Now airline flight attendants are seeking to have them banned again. Can I take aboard 4ozs of hand sanitizer in a plastic bottle, or am I reduced to only 2ozs now? Am I allowed to pass through with my bottle of Pepsi, or do

I have to trash it and buy another after passing through security?  Of course some things should be obvious to most people.  Guns, for instance, will get you stopped every time, and likely a trip downtown by Federal officers.  Trying to sneak aboard with any kind of illegal drugs is also a no-brainer.  Surprisingly, there are many people out there who seem to be clueless as to what the TSA is looking for and what will get them yanked out of line and into a holding cell. If its sharp, pointed, and could be even remotely considered a weapon, leave it home.  And, yes, Ninja Throwing Stars are considered a weapon, as one poor schmuck found out trying to leave Las Vegas.

•If you are not expecting a package, delivery or service call do not answer the door. Insist that the deliverer provide you with verbal verification of his employment and call the company to confirm that the deliverer's impromptu visit is legitimate. Your front door should remain closed and locked!

Twitter is abuzz with the news that the sign could be real.

Taylor Swift can take herself pretty seriously sometimes, writing bitter love songs such as "Dear John" or emotional break up songs about one of her many ex-boyfriends.

So it was nice to see that Swift may have a sense of humor about herself in this security sign allegedly posted outside of her Rhode Island mansion. The sign references the lyrics to her hit song "I Knew You Were Trouble."

Today ABC 13 reported stories about two local counties that are seeing increases in burglaries, break-ins and scam artists. In communities where residents pride themselves on being able to leave our doors open, the news is disturbing. The Campbell County Sheriff's Office says they've had an increase in car break-ins, scams and home break-ins. In Bedford, violent crime and burglaries are increasing.

A common crime in early summer is theft from cars because many people leave purses, wallets and other valuables inside and the doors unlocked. Remember to remove all valuables each time you leave your car and lock it. Most theft is a crime of opportunity and if you make yourself and possessions a tough target, you are less likely to be victimized.
