Working parents- and that's the majority of American families today- share the anxiety, frustration, and even fear involved in leaving children "on their own" when school lets out, child care arrangements with neighbors and relatives break down, or there simply are not any alternatives. WHAT CAN YOU DO? 1. Make sure your children are ready to care for themselves. 2. Teach them basic safety rules. 3. Know where your kids are, what they are doing, and who they  are with. ARE THEY READY?   CAN YOUR CHILDREN- 1. Be trusted to go straight home after school? 2. Easily use the telephone, locks, and kitchen appliances? 3. Follow rules and instructions well? 4. Handle unexpected situations without panicking? 5. Stay home alone without being afraid? Talk it over with them, and listen to their worries and ideas. Work out rules on having friends over, household chores, homework, and television. Remember, staying at home alone can build a child's self esteem, sense of responsibility, and practical skills. TEACH YOUR "HOME ALONE" CHILDREN 1. How to call 9-1-1 or your area's emergency number, or call the operator? 2. How to give directions to your house in case of an emergency? 3. To check in with you or a neighbor immediately after arriving home. 4. To never accept gifts or rides from people they don't know well. (And you approve of) 5. How to use the door, windows, locks and the alarm system if you have one? 6. To never let anyone into the home without asking your permission. 7. To never let a caller at the door or on the phone know they are alone. 8. To carry a house key with them in a safe place (inside a shirt pocket or sock)-do not leave it under a mat or on a ledge. 9. How to escape in case of fire? 10. To not go into the house or apartment if things do not look right- a broken window, ripped screen, or opened door. 11. To let you know about anything that frightens them or makes them feel uncomfortable.  

One of the most dangerous places for children is the backyard swimming pool. Do not consider putting in a pool until they are at least six years or older, if possible. Make sure you practice pool safety year-round. Pool and spa submersions and drowning happen quickly, especially when they involve children. A child can drown in the time it takes to answer a telephone. Learn the simple steps you need to know to keep your children and family safe in and around pools and spas. One of the most effective means of safety is having constant adult supervision when children are in, or near the pool. It also means installing the first measure of safety in the form of a pool alarm. The pool alarm is an electronic monitoring system that automatically sounds an alarm when children or pets fall into your unsupervised pool. It's portable, self-contained, and lightweight. More than 900 children between 1 and 14 years old die each year in drowning accidents. In California, drowning is the number one cause of accidental death for children between 1 and 4. A pool alarm is your first line of defense, and can be the difference between life and death. Here are some other tips as set forth by the American Academy of Pediatrics to help safe-guard your children from accidental drowning this summer. ·         Never leave your children alone in or near the pool, even for a moment. An adult who knows CPR should actively supervise children at all times. ·         Practice touch supervision with children younger than 5 years. This means that the adult is within an arm's length of the child at all times. ·         You must put up a fence to separate your house from the pool. Most young children who drown in pools wander out of the house and fall into       the pool. Install a fence at least 4 feet high around all 4 sides of the pool. This fence will completely separate the pool from the house and play       area of the yard. Use gates that self-close and self-latch, with latches higher than your children's reach. ·         Keep rescue equipment (such as a shepherd's hook or life preserver) and a telephone by the pool. ·         Do not use air-filled “swimming aids” as a substitute for approved life vests. ·         Remove all toys from the pool after use so children aren't tempted to reach for them. ·         After the children are done swimming, secure the pool so they can't get back into it. ·        A power safety cover that meets the standards of the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) may add to the protection of your  children but should not be used in place of the fence between your house and the pool. Even fencing around your pool and using a power safety cover will not prevent all drowning. Remember, teaching your child how to swim DOES NOT mean your child is safe in water.     

    If you're like me you miss the old days of air travel, when going from the ticket counter to your departing gate didn't include long check lines, strip searches and x-ray machines. It seems the list of what you can and can't take with you on the plane is growing, or at least changing every couple of months or so. Small penknives used to be banned, then the TSA said they were ok. Now airline flight attendants are seeking to have them banned again. Can I take aboard 4ozs of hand sanitizer in a plastic bottle, or am I reduced to only 2ozs now? Am I allowed to pass through with my bottle of Pepsi, or do I have to trash it and buy another after passing through security?  Of course some things should be obvious to most people.  Guns, for instance, will get you stopped every time, and likely a trip downtown by Federal officers.  Trying to sneak aboard with any kind of illegal drugs is also a no-brainer.  Surprisingly, there are many people out there who seem to be clueless as to what the TSA is looking for and what will get them yanked out of line and into a holding cell. If its sharp, pointed, and could be even remotely considered a weapon, leave it home.  And, yes, Ninja Throwing Stars are considered a weapon, as one poor schmuck found out trying to leave Las Vegas.
